Al Mi'raj: Desert Crossing

Description

Just because your clan specializes in assassinations and magical diseases doesn't mean they can't take a moment out once in a while for gentler thoughts. Two Al Mi'Raj sisters cross the desert at night, one enjoying the brilliant view of the stars...

Al Mi'raj are from arabian myth; yellow rabbits or hares with large unicorn horns. But these are no virgin-loving nature guardians like unicorns. Al Mi'raj are viciously carnivorous with sharp meat-eater's teeth. It will use its long, sharp horn and prodigious leaps to impale and bring down animals much larger than itself so it can feast.

But its most feared ability was that it spreads disease, and the presence of even one can threaten a whole region. People in the real world in centuries past made very good money, even though al Mi'raj are completely mythical, by creating reports of al mi'raj sightings and then offering to know the techniques or magic needed to hunt it down.

These two belong to a fantasy world race based on the myth. The Al Mi'Raj here are shape shifters, with a fully human form, a fully rabbit form (with predator teeth and horn, of course), and a form halfway between the two which is shown here. In this form, they are very fierce fighters, using prodigious leaping ability, greater than human agility, and hand and toe claws to deadly effect. They also have very powerful neck muscles to support a devastating leaping impaling attack an any opponent man sized or larger.

But what their most impressive and feared ability is being able to magically induce disease in anyone struck by their claws or horn. Each clan of Al Mi'raj cultivate a certain kind of disease; some carry wasting sicknesses, some induce madness, some make the victim weak and feverish for weeks or months. The diseases usually are not especially contagious (the Al Mi'Raj clans see no benefit in wiping out entire towns or regions, since they are small in number and make their living by hiring out to wealthy patrons), but they can all be devastating and many quite deadly.

One unusual practice is that the black horns are preserved after death and forged into weapons used by living Al Mi'raj. These weapons still retain the sickness-inducing magic so that anyone cut by them is almost sure to contract it. The Al Mi'raj do not consider this ghoulish at all and in fact consider it a great honor to have their horns used this way after death. Such horn-forged weapons are passed down through clan lines. The assassin in the picture above is licking blood off a blade forged from her grandfather's horn.
